Bin the wheelie bins - stick with the existing rubbish collections

We the undersigned petition the council to Continue the existing arrangements for the collection of rubbish and recycling, without changing to biweekly collections with wheelie bins.

Many of the homes in Wimbledon are terraced houses and have very little space for wheelie bins. Changing to wheelie bins will considerably detract from these properties, which is a particular concern in areas like the South Park Garden conservation area.

Council response

Thank you for your petition. The London borough of Merton is introducing wheeled bins for waste and recycling collections. Wheeled bins used as part of a modern waste and recycling collection regime will introduce a variety of benefits that include the following:

Boost Merton's recycling rate from 37% to over 45% within 12 months, making us one of the best recycling boroughs in London.
Keep our streets clean. New wheelie bins will reduce spillages on collection day and store your recycling and rubbish more securely between collections, reducing litter.
Save money. The new service will save up to £1.6 million per year; money that will be used to protect our vital services.
Increase efficiency and help the environment. Around three-quarters of households in Merton will see their collection day change. This will help us make the collection rounds more efficient and reduce the amount of time collection vehicles are out on the road, which is good for the environment.
